in the early church, Aland argues that one need no further the Book of Acts, which describes how the apostles ventured afield preaching the new doctrines of Jesus. However, Acts
abbreviates its account of early missionary work. Scholarship suggests that missionary work during this period went beyond the efforts of Peter or Paul mentioned in Acts, as Paul,
in particular, seems to have been the central figure of large group of missionary helpers (Aland, 1985). The institutional base for early missionary work is connected with the
primary controversy during that time, which pertains to the question of authority. In other words, there was controversy concerning who, precisely was the representative of the Christ on earth (McManners,
1990). James, the brother of Jesus, emerged as the generally acknowledged head of the early Christian community in Jerusalem (McManners, 1990). The principal method for spreading the Christian doctrine
was through the preaching of missionaries. However, as demonstrated by the numerous epistles that compromise the bulk of the New Testament, writing did play a role in clarifying specific
points of doctrine, particularly in regards to controversy over whether Judaic custom was still applicable to Christians. Missionaries interacted with the people on a personal level, preaching the gospel, living
in their homes, and persuading them to the Christian faith, at least partially, through the example of their character, as well as the ability of the apostles to perform miracles
