really not all that different from the situation today. In other words, there is still a significant population associated with China so it comes as no surprise that the region
contained a great many people during earlier eras. The European effort at global expansion was characterized by both unique country experiences and the rule of the Ottoman Empire. The decline
of the Ottomans would begin during the seventeenth century (Reilly, 1996). Therefore, one could say that during the period in question, the Ottoman Empire was at its peak. During the
1500s, France was considered to be the largest European country in existence (Roberts, 1993). It is important to relate that after the Black Plague, the population had been down during
1500 anyway (Roberts, 1993). Europe however would begin to enjoy a good climate coupled with natural resources suitable for farming (Robert, 1993). Europe was also expanding at the time.
Most notably, expeditions would go to the New World. During the 1600s it seems as if France was the strongest nation. Kishlansky (1997) suggests that the Spanish Empire was not
doing well during this time period and that the rulers never really recovered from the fact that they were almost captured in 1643. France was a great European power at
the moment, and even when England would fight against Spain and Holland, France would participate (Kishlansky, 1993). One can see how these countries and entities evolved, how they are today,
and why there are different relationships between nations. At the same time, one can say that the idea of the empire would eventually become dated, but between 1400 and 1600
