continuous service for the entire time that the business has been operational. The Stevens family currently faces the need to decide whether and how to expand the internal spaces,
or whether it should open another facility some distance away from what currently is the only location. The Facility The building that houses
the business formerly was a grand residence in the town and was extensively remodeled in the 1970s. The main floor is the public floor containing receiving rooms and offices.
Preparation work and casket sales take place in the basement, and the upper floor is used for storage. During the remodeling project
in the 1970s, the main floor was altered so that aside from offices and other utilitarian spaces, it holds a chapel, two waiting areas attached to the chapel and four
large (40 x 40) receiving rooms. Each of these rooms has a central divider, an accordion wall that can be closed to create two smaller rooms or opened and
stored out of sight to enable the use of the full room. Stevens dilemma is that when it exceeds four concurrent funerals and
each family elects to receive friends, the half-size rooms rarely provide sufficient space for the deceaseds family and friends. Even when the room itself is adequate, the public spaces
outside the room become quite crowded, often uncomfortably so. The family has received occasional warnings from the fire marshal that it routinely has the space filled to its technical
