Diabetes now has reached "epidemic" proportions, affecting far greater numbers of individuals than at any time in the past. Health care professionals are well versed in the types of
care that diabetic patients need and the daily, ongoing care that they need to provide for themselves. Need and Rationale for Selection Nurses
and allied health care providers are so familiar with the consequences of diabetes that they may overlook some points that patients need to know for their own well being.
Results of a needs assessment survey indicate that most nurses at this facility would be open to gaining additional training in teaching newly-diagnosed patients about their disease. Program Goals
The primary goal of the program is to provide a higher level of education for the hospitals patients. Certainly every care giver on
the facilitys staff is aware of the growing incidence of diabetes, but the topic can serve to reinforce the growing and valid concern over effective management of the disease. Learning
