paper properly! Introduction Leon Uris Exodus has been both widely read and widely disparaged. Despite
disparaging the story itself, no critic denies the far-reaching effects the book has had on modern history and public appeal since it was published in 1958. There are many complaints
over the decades against how the Jewish refugees are portrayed in Exodus, but as Freund notes, there is at least one true theme running through Uris refuge narrative -- and
that is the success of the naval commander, spy and businessman who captained the Exodus in 1947 in the attempt to bring Jewish immigrants to Palestine.
The long-running complaint is that much of the world, and especially Americans, understand the Israeli-Palestine question only from the viewpoint presented by Uris in Exodus. The
problem is viewed as the success of Uris narrative, built through stereotypical characters such as the sycophant Kitty and Ari Ben Canaan. The sweetheart and the tough guy characterization is
