if a character does one thing or another? In films like Ground Hog Day, Final Destination and Sliding Doors and many others, existentialist ideas abound. This is also seen in
the film Vanishing Point. The film which was directed by Richard Sarafian came at the beginning of the 1970s, an unusual time in American history, but one where everything is
questioned. The "question authority" theme was in full vogue and existence was questioned as well. Organized religion was no longer satisfying. There had to be something more, and a New
Age movement began to slowly materialize. Vanishing Point really did not explicitly address existentialist themes but it seems as if the film in its entirety acts as a metaphor for
life. The plot entails a race car driver who is on a mission. One can look at a car ride as the ride of life. People have compared times of
their lives to roller coaster rides. Most people do not drive past 60 or 70 or 80. Some brave souls drive at 90 or 100 miles per hour but the
norm is more around 70. Life too is like that. A few will make it to the age of 100 and appear on the Today show, but most will die
before that time. The speedometer on the car can indeed represent life and how or why one can get to a particular age. In fact, existentialist themes are provided with
the use of symbolism. The amphetamines that the protagonist uses throughout the film embraces the notion that individuals are able to slow down time or speed it up. It all
