existence, integral to the word existentialism has meaning in that it suggests a distinctively human mode of being (257). Different theorists seem to embrace different thought in terms of existentialism. Obviously, Hegel was not one of them but others such as Kant, Heidegger and Sartre are well known for their acquaintance and contribution with this line of thinking. However, there are many divisions in terms of perceptions on existentialism. In fact, the public perception of existentialism had been furthered, and to some extent tainted, by political existentialists ("Existentialism" PG). For many Americans, existentialists have been Sartre Camus, and Nietzsche who each to some extent symbolize an even darker image of life (PG). And then there is Fellini. Yes, filmmakers often broach existential subjects and Fellini is well known for his artistic genius and three-dimensional contribution to the medium. In his 1957 work Nights of Cabiria, a young prostitute is self-sufficient and takes things in stride. It is a film that rails against preconceived notions of what is right and wrong and prompts one to think about life in a different way. What is right for Cabiria may not be right for others. At the same time, Cabiria is the typical abused prostitute. Her boyfriend treats her badly and in fact the films opening shocks as he throws her into the water where she almost drowns. Hence, Cabiria is not an Xavier Hollander, but one cannot say she is not a "happy hooker" either. In other words, Cabiria is a strong spirit who not only takes life as it comes, but does not attach herself to the mundane.
