The philosophy of existentialism originated among late nineteenth century philosophers such as Keirkegaard and Nietzsche,
it wouldnt become popular until after World War II which , coupled with the societal disruption of World War I and the turmoil which resulted in Europe, in particular, resulted
in a mass disillusionment. People were appalled by the senseless violence of the war. They were disadvantaged, however, in their understanding of themselves and humanity in general.
Science had become their measuring sticks and spiritual faith had largely gone out the door. Some even began to discount the existence of God.
Jean Paul Sartre, his lover Simone de Beauvoir, and Albert Camus were among the more infamous of those that discounted God and mankinds devine creation.
It is important to note, however, that the precise contribution either Camus or Beauvoir made to the philosophy is debatable. Camus contended he was not an existentialist! Some
say that Beauvoir was only a sounding board for Sartre and contributed no original thought of her own. Others say that Beauvoir was actually influential in the production of
Sartres work, that she not only edited it but reshaped it to a degree to reflect her own beliefs. It is also said that Beauvoir considered herself a writer
