Websters defines the word in part by stating that the individual "must assume ultimate responsibility for his acts of free will without any certain knowledge of what is right or wrong or good or bad." Existentialist philosophers vary widely in their assessment of the extent of human existence. Sartre promoted the notion of the dead not truly being gone - i.e., no longer in existence - as unlikely, at best. In Sartres view, people continue to exist only so long as someone remembers them. Nietzsche promoted the notion that "God is dead" in the early years of the last century, but Kierkegaard used an existential base as a tool to strive to drive people to God in his native Denmark. The single overriding theme that provides a hallmark for existentialism is that individuals are responsible for their own actions. Individuals make choices daily, all of which have consequences that the individual needs to accept as his own. Free will is a central concept to existentialism, for without it, individuals are not acting from their own perspectives but rather from one they have been told or otherwise instructed to hold. Sartres "No Exit" Joseph Garcin grows closer to Inez and Estelle in telling them his story. Giving other people information constitutes giving "power" over the one providing the personal information, but it also provides insight for the one who has lived the experiences about which he tells another.
