There has been ongoing debate as to whether or not the G-spot actually exists from the time that Dr. Ernst Grafenberg first described it in 1950. At that time, the Grafenberg-spot or G-spot was described as a very sensitive area located on the anterior wall of the vagina, situated roughly halfway between the cervix and the pubic bone, in line with the course of the urethra (Burri, Cherikas and Spector, 2010). Grafenberg observed that the female urethra enlarges during the course of sexual stimulation (Puppo, 2011). The following examination of literature reveals that the G-spot can be regarded as mythical, due to the fact that scientific investigation has failed to provide proof that the G-spot is a universal feature of female anatomy. The Grafenberg spot or G-spot is a term coined by Drs. John Perry and Beverly Whipple, who named the area after Grafenberg and his description of this sensitive area of the vagina (Jannini, et al, 2010). Stimulation of the G-spot area produces a variety of sensations, ranging from discomfort and the urge to urinate to pleasure and orgasm, which have been reported to be accompanied by emission of a semen-like fluid. This aspect of female sexuality needs more research as the studies that have reported evidence for female ejaculation have involved only small participant samples and have also exhibited methodological biases (Jannini, et al, 2010).
