"exegesis" in Christian scholarship is typically defined as the act of "attentive listening to the voice of God for the sake of the church and its ministry."2 It is,
therefore, the responsibility of the exegete to draw from biblical texts, universal truths that, because of their universal relevance to human needs and human nature, remain unchanging across the centuries.
As this indicates, the process of exegesis aids others in seeing how scriptural message are applicable to the modern reader. According to biblical scholars, the first step in exegetical
process is to delimit the passage, that is, to note where the natural beginning and ending of the passage occurs in scripture.3 Such demarcations are not always congruent with chapter
and verse demarcations as these formalities were added to scripture at a later date from the original text.4 Accordingly this exegetical analysis of Jesus baptism as given in the Synoptic
Gospels will examine Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; and Luke 3:19-22. By examining biblical scholarship on these passages, as well as exploring the interdependence of these three accounts, the following exegetical
