the longest, the weightiest and the more influential of all his letters. Paul had been engaged in raising money for the needy in Jerusalem Church hoping that these contributions would
eliminate at least some of the suspicions certain populations held against him. The collection was complete and Paul waiting to go to Jerusalem. His intention was then to carry the
gospel to Spain and on his way to stop in Rome. Paul was writing to the Christian Roman church not to address specific problems in the church but to prepare
them for his long awaited visit to that strategic church. Letters in Ancient Greece customarily began with a salutation that included the names of the sender and the recipient followed
by a short greeting. In this case, Paul extended the typical format to express his faith as well as his feelings on some issues. The end of Pauls letter includes
ethical teaching and personal remarks. The verses discussed herein are part of his teachings. The city of Rome was founded in 753 and by the time Paul was planning to
visit the city, it had a population of over one million people most of whom were slaves. There was only two classes of people in Rome, the rich and the
poor and most were poor. To place Pauls letter in a historical context, it follows the Thessalonian and Corinthian letters but precedes Colossian and Ephesians. Some of the themes of
the earlier letters are taken up again in Romans (Alexander and Alexander 1994, p. 581). Romans is Pauls greatest work because it is more than a book of theology, it
