To save the Galatians from false prophets, Paul must defend the Gospel he preached to them. There have been many debates about this epistle, beginning with exactly to whom it was written - North or South Galatia, which affects the year it was written and the location from which Paul wrote it. Of Galatians, Wright said: "The dense and dramatic argument of Galatians excites and baffles by turns. Sometimes perceived as a flamboyant younger sister of the more settled and reflective letter to Rome, this epistle has provoked endless controversy at all levels, from details of exegesis to flights of systematic theology" (Wright, 2000). Another issue found in Galatians is Pauls thoughts about the law, which seem rather negative in Galatians but which are more positive in Romans. This difference has been explained using the concept of "covenantal nomism" (Watson, 2005). Watson reports Dunns explanation of covenantal nomism as a term that is used to refer to and "describe a kind of Jewish self-identity in which the covenant relationship between God and Gods people begins with Gods gracious election and is maintained by adherence to the law" (Watson, 2005). Dunn also interpreted Pauls comments to basically result in a formula: according to Judaism being within the law was equal to being within the covenant but Paul argued the opposite- to be within Christ was equal to being within the covenant and being with the law was equal to being outside of Christ (Watson, 2005).
