a family tradition and the article implies that violence is actually learned behavior. Perhaps the most interesting moment is that, in the end, the squeamish individual relays a time when
he asks a doctor why he cannot stand the sight of blood and guts. The reply is simply that he is not used to it. Indeed, doctors and morticians and
medical examiners in particular can handle cutting the human body without a thought. It is second nature. They do not throw up, do not cry, do not have stomach aches.
Rather, cutting up bodies becomes something of interest. On the other hand, many people today report serious responses to violence. There is something called post traumatic stress disorder, a
condition that has been equated with Vietnam. And also, while the executioner in the article does not feel bad about letting someone hang, other stories come about that suggest not
everyone can get used to the deed. An eyewitness to a modern execution relayed the following chilling observation: "For 48 hours after the execution I felt an extreme compulsion to
shower and shower and shower again. Eventually I realized that I felt filthy because I had observed an obscenity. Never in my life have I been so aware of the
reality of evil as I was in that observation booth, watching the deliberate, methodical and antiseptic killing of Samuel McDonald, a killing done by the state of Missouri in the
