A 6 page paper. Excusism is a word that is not found in abundance in the literature. It means the ability to come up with an explanation or excuse for just about anything and everything. The writer discusses the fact that we live in a society where excuses are offered for everything and personal accountability seems to have been lost. Our students learn this behavior from events reported in the media and even from parents who provide flimsy excuses for their children's absences from school. Examples of what some states are doing to combat this trend are reported. The effects of excusism in terms of achievement are reported. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

is a flimsy excuse, at best, but every once in a while it almost makes sense. For example, I could not do my research on the Internet because the cat
was laying on the keyboard. We live in a society where there is a dramatic and significant lack of responsibility for ones own actions. No matter how inconsequential an act
is or how serious it is, people do not take responsibility. Some of the most dramatic examples of excusism can be found in the criminal justice system. individuals now commit
murder because they claim they were mistreated as children. Even if this is true, it does not excuse the behavior. Leavitt, in 1994, reported that in a National Law Journal
poll of 800 people, 59 percent said that the portrayal of criminals as victims had gone too far. Leavitt reported: "Americans are sick of the kind of `excusism defense lawyers
are advancing" (1994). Dave Mundy, an investigative reporter who now owns a small town newspaper offered a different perspective: "Like the other wonderful forms of excusism modern utopians have
given us, creative spelling opens up realms and realms of new opportunities. Just think: we could now put out a special edition of the paper just for those people who
have learned to read by the Whole Language method" (1996). Yes, Mundy was criticizing the educational system and in particular the so-called creative spelling craze but his comment should be
taken seriously. As he points out, small town newspapers have been historically criticized for quality control, specifically, typos (Mundy, 1996). But, now that schools were allowing students to do
creative spelling, everything that previously fit under the umbrella of "typographical errors" could not be excused as "creative spelling" (Mundy, 1996). The point is that even the school system
