The conflicts that existed between Galileo and the Catholic Church were not merely conflicts of science and religion (ChristianAnswers.net). The Catholic Church had science, the problem was
it was a different science than was preached by Galileo (ChristianAnswers.net). Galileos form of science was Copernican and the Churchs was Aristotelian (ChristianAnswers.net). "Aristotle (384-322 B.C.) believed the universe is
finite and spherical with a stationary earth at its center. Enclosing the whole universe is the sphere of the Prime Motion turned by the First Unmoved Mover" (ChristianAnswers.net). As such
it becomes clear that the Church followed science that related to the universe having been created by God. Copernicus believed that our universe rotated around the sun, and this was
a very powerful and controversial issue. "In 1615 Galileo wrote a letter outlining his views to Madame Christina of Lorraine, the Grand Duchess
of Tuscany, Concerning the Use of Biblical Quotations in Matters of Science" (ChristianAnswers.net). This letter was used against him in a trial and he was told that he must stop
all involvement with Copernicanism and to stop teaching and talking about this approach (ChristianAnswers.net). The fact that he did not stop writing and working on his theories, though he did
stop openly teaching, indicates he should have been excommunicated at that point. When the Church makes such a declaration a person could not have expected to be allowed the safety
