their pain, or their helplessness at not being able to move their legs as occurs in some circumstances, I did experience the reaction of others. I was somewhat surprised at
some of the reactions, but many people were helpful and treated me in a rather ordinary fashion. In fact, the majority of people tried to help me. When I first
entered the store, I quickly got into the chair hoping not to be discovered as a fully functioning human being. With the pretense of disability, I went through the store
on wheels. I felt very short as I looked up at everything on the store shelves. I quickly realized that what I was used to reaching up for, even on
my toes, I could not while I was in a seated position. Further, I did not have the room to carry more than a basket full of food so I
had to be careful in respect to my choices. When I rolled through the cereal aisle there was a woman with short hair and a child who was probably about
one and a half years old. The child was staring at me. Probably, she was staring at the wheelchair. Yet, it did feel for a few minutes as if I
were a freak. I asked the woman if she could help me reach a box of cereal on the top shelf. She smiled faintly, got the box of cereal for
me, and then moved on to the next aisle. There was no chit chat. The woman simply helped me. I was soon in the cereal aisle alone and I did
remain for a few minutes to see who would come down the aisle next. A man walked through with a woman who seemed to be his daughter. They discussed the
