fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the world opened up and everything seemed possible. Intellectual and artistic expression reached its zenith as cultural emphasis shifted from reason to the individual.
The preeminence of the individual was, perhaps, the most definitive characteristic of the Renaissance, and was responsible for dramatic changes in existing value systems. European culture evolved from medieval
primitivism that was based on religious myths and romantic tales of heroism into an enlightened and more sophisticated era of realism. This dramatic shift has been immortalized for all
time in the Miguel de Cervantes (Saavedra) whimsical adventure tale, Don Quixote de la Mancha, in which he satirized both the chivalric code of the old world and the emerging
creative imagination that redefined moral precepts. Don Quixote features examples of the Renaissance that have become buzzwords or catch phrases to represent this course of study, and include humanism,
politics, and abstract expressionism. Reason is forever cast to the wind in the portrayal of a middle-aged landowning bachelor named Alonso Quixana. He longs to break away from the
repressive conformity of Spanish society and become his own man. Ironically, as the plot reveals, the only way he can become an individual is to relive the medieval times
of knight errantry detailed in his favorite books. Changing himself into the dashing figure, Don Quixote de la Mancha, Alonso embarks upon a quest to preserve traditional values and
protect the world from evil. As with all knights, Quixote needs a sidekick and finds his perfect foil in Sancho Panza, a simple man of reason rather than vision
who could not be more different from the master he served. The characterizations of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza symbolize how the Renaissance changed after the introduction of humanism.
