In truth, however, these appellations stem from a romantic view that may or may not have anything to do with actual reality. In other words, there is no real indication that Paris is intrinsically more romantic or Detroit intrinsically more industrious than any other major cities. Nevertheless, these perceptions persist, in large part because of the storied past of these cities and the extent to which that past is preserved in the present day. The actual preservation of the past character or heritage of a city, however, is somewhat problematic. On the one hand, there are actual neighborhoods which preserve something of a citys original character, and on the other hand, there are manufactured neighborhoods, designed to meet the needs of tourists and affluent members of society which represent a superficial facsimile of that character. That said, this is not necessarily to the detriment of the manufactured neighborhoods and communities. Indeed, many of these communities may well function just as legitimately as a communal activity center as the citys actual historical neighborhoods, just with an appeal to a different demographic. This is clearly the case in Boston, Massachusetts. One of the most popular and romantically appealing neighborhoods in Boston is the North End, or "Little Italy", the home of Italian immigrants widely known for its insular tight-knit community and preservation of authentic Bostonian and Italian culture. This might well be contrasted with the fairly recent development of the Charles River Park neighborhood, with its sprawl of condominiums centered around a coveted expanse of green space in the other congested West End of Boston. Despite their intrinsic differences, however, both are accurate representations of the true character of Boston in their own right.
