paper examines the book and the life of its author Stephen Crane. Synopsis The book covers a period of only two days. A young man whose name we find out
later is Henry Fleming, enlists in the Union Army. Like many young men, his idea of war is idealistic and wrong. The actual experience is horrific. He is in a
charge with the rest of his regiment and engages in battle, but when the counterattack comes, he runs, despising himself for his cowardice but unable to stop. He wanders around
on the battlefield, comes across a string of wounded men, one of whom he recognizes as Jim Conklin, a member of his unit. Conklin has the "gray seal of death"
on his face but Henry tries to care for him (Crane). He, Jim and the "tattered man" stagger on together until Jim wanders off into a field and waits there
for his death, which comes swiftly. Henry watches him die, then runs away, unable to stay a moment longer in case the "tattered man" also dies. As he wanders,
Henry is clubbed in the head by another crazed soldier and sustains a serious wound. Henry stumbles into his own camp where he is welcomed back and tended; the men
are happy to see him but he cannot bring himself to tell anyone that he ran. He simply says he got mixed up and ended up "over on the right"
where he was shot in the head (Crane). They take him at his word. But the next day when the battle resumes, Henry finds himself furious with the Rebel army
for not giving up and going away and for making him fight again, and he becomes a sort of robot, loading and firing as fast as he can, charging the
