As such, North Carolina judges tend to provide a useful background for studying the various ways in which educational and professional backgrounds can influence the qualifications and bench record of elected officials. This paper will explore the backgrounds and records of two judges, North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Barbara Jackson, and North Carolina Court of Appeals Judge Ann Marie Calabria, in this context. The two judges tend to share similar educational backgrounds. Jackson, who was elected to the Supreme Court in 2010, attended university at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, obtaining a bachelors in 1984, and a law degree in 1990. Calabria, who was elected to the Court of Appeals judgeship in 2010 as well, went to university at Fairleigh Dickinson, where she obtained a bachelors degree in 1979, prior to transferring to Campbell Universitys school of law, where she got her legal degree in 1983. From then on, however, the two judges backgrounds diverge somewhat. In the state of North Carolina, the qualifications for judgeship are very basic. To wit, a person must simply be licensed to practice law in the state, and be under the age of 72 (the states mandatory retirement age). Plainly, both judges meet this qualification, and little more can be said. Because of the electoral system in North Carolina, record is somewhat more important than these basic qualifications, so more useful information might be gleaned from such an examination. After obtaining her law degree, Jackson worked as the legal counsel for North Carolinas governor James Martin for roughly ten years, and then divided her time in the public sector both as a disability advocate, and as an advocate for the Department of Labor.
