Article 1 - Scientists Say Global Warming Frees Dirty Dozen Toxic Chemicals From Arctic Sea Ice This first article is published in a daily national newspaper in Australia. The article, which is not attributed to a reported, so may be assumed as written by a staff writer is reporting on a negative effect of global warming. The article is reporting on a study that has been published in a scientific journal; Nature Climate Change. The article concerns the increase in the pollutants which are being released into the air as a result of the Arctic ice melting. The pollutants are referred to as the Dirty Dozen, are explained chemical compounds that are known to be harmful to the environment, which were previously known as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Included within this category of compounds are a number of harmful pesticides and insecticides which were only banned in 2001, including the well-known DDT. The article goes on to a explain how and why this is bad for the environment, including the problem of molecules which take many decades to break down, and the risks of these pose to the environment, including risks to the food chain and to fertility rates. It is recognized that the banns that were put in place have led to a decrease in the primary commission of the "dirty dozen", but goes on to note that this could be undermined by the secondary pollution as the pollutants are liberated from the Arctic ice due to global warming. ...
