article the author first notes that "On November 25, 2001, a Massachusetts biotechnology company, Advanced Cell Technology (ACT), reported in an online journal--e-biomed: The Journal of Regenerative Medicine--that it was
the first to clone human embryos. In a concurrent article in the January Scientific American, the researchers explained that their results could represent the dawn of a new age in
medicine by demonstrating that the goal of therapeutic cloning is within reach" (Stix, 2002; p. 18). This form of therapeutic cloning is not reproductive cloning where an individual is created,
but rather a cloning of cells "needed to treat diabetes, paralysis and other now incurable conditions. Many leading scientists, however, say the work should never have been published, because the
research failed on several counts to achieve its goals" (Stix, 2002; p. 18). The first problem was that they did not produce any stem cells at all. "But more fundamentally,
some investigators questioned the companys basic assertion about having actually cloned human embryos" (Stix, 2002; p. 18). The paper continues and brings the reader a multitude of opinions from
various scientists as it relates to the subject at hand, giving the reader a broad understanding of how diverse the scientific community is in relationship to all types of cloning.
The article presents the reader with some very good presentations in that it is specifically addressing one particular endeavor in cell research, rather than going into great detail about
what is wrong or right with stem cell research in the first place. Since the idea of cloning is such a controversial one more often than not we are provided
with articles that only debate the ethical involvement. So, while this particular reader is against cloning in many instances, this article addresses a specific case, providing us with varied scientific
