This 20 page paper examines Airbus, the main competitor to Boeing. The paper examines the company in its competitive environment using Porters Five Forces framework, and then looks at the internal resources of the company, including the financial, physical, intangible and cultural resources, and then looks at the internal factors using an IFE matrix. A single threat which cases the industry, that of the impact of rising fuel prices and the way that this may impact on demand is a considered, looking at the way in which the company is coping with these before the paper goes on to finish with some recommendations. 1. Introduction Airbus is a well known aircraft manufacturer, the major competitor to Boeing, the firm has had mixed fortunes, but to meet the challenges of the future. The company has also be subject to controversy, during the early years there was the benefit that Airbus gained from EU government subsidies, it may be argued that in order to compete in the industry dominated by Boeing. Over the years the firm has had to change and evolve, to meet the changing needs of the environment, today there are no subsidies and the firm is competing with Boeing very successfully, outselling tem for the first time in 2003 (McAuley, 2003). With 5,855 aircraft currently in operation1 and a further 3,698 on order or being delivered the firm appear to have a good order book (Airbus, 2010). However, in 2010 the competitive environment is changing, global recession and increasing fuel prices are having negative impact, but at the same time the volume of air traffic is expected to increase, with only two major suppliers Airbus has to understand the environment and the ways in which it can compete in order to assess the impact that major influences,. This paper will look at the competitive environment and at the internal environment in order to use the information to assess the way that the organization can meet and deal with these threats. 2. Competitive Environment The firm has many macro environmental influences, Porters Five Forces model provides a framework that can be used assess the influences in the firm. The five forces Porter identifies are the existing competitors, the threat of new entrants, substitute products (or services), and the power of purchasers and suppliers (Mintzberg et al, 2008).
