in the future. What is Evolutionary Robotics? According to Wikipedia, "Evolutionary Robotics (ER) is a methodology that uses evolutionary computation to develop controllers for autonomous robots" (Evolutionary robotics, 2006). "Evolutionary computation" is a hugely complex mathematical operation defined as a "subfield of artificial intelligence" that involves "combinatorial optimization problems" (Evolutionary computation, 2006). "Combinatorial optimization problems" are problems that are difficult to solve but can be approached by different methods (i.e., brute force-systematically trying all possible solutions one after another; constructing algorithms, etc.) until a solution is found (Combinatorial optimization, 2006). (At this point, if desired, the student may wish to insert further information regarding the mathematical operations inherent in robotics, but for an overview paper they seem unnecessary.) A controller, in this usage, is a component in a system "that monitors certain input variables and adjusts other output variables to achieve the desired operation" (Controller, 2006). A thermostat in a houses heating system is a controller (Controller, 2006). Finally, an "autonomous robot" is one that can work in an "unstructured environment" without needing constant human supervision (Autonomous robots, 2006). Putting it all together, then, we learn that evolutionary robotics is a method that uses various problem-solving techniques to develop a control device that will optimize the operation of robots that can work without constant human supervision. Even more simply, evolutionary robotics solves problems so that robots can do their jobs without us. Heres another definition, one which takes into account what most people probably think when they hear the word "evolution"-Darwin: "Evolutionary robotics (ER) is a term that has gained currency since the early 1990s for the study and application of an artificial analogue of natural Darwinian evolution to the design of robots or simulated agents-usually to the design of their control systems, or artificial brains, but sometimes ...
