quickly with little suffering and avoids large scale wars--nothing could be further from the truth. The society has not progressed very well. Some might even contend that there has been
a negative progression. The point is that although many give lip service to humanitarian efforts, and advancements in Western civilization, the only thing that people have accomplished is advancing both
technologically and in terms of personal longevity, something that does not have any relationship to morality. It is true that people can -- particularly during this booming economy--do more for
the less fortunate, but wealth has created even more divides. There is a broadening chasm between rich and poor, and with wealth comes greed. Thus, while the world is better
off there is a hoarding of goods to the extent that people do suffer more. The United States for example has a great need to defend oil rich allies
in the Middle East, while ignoring the plagues of others. At the same time, there is Rwanda and Bosnia, and the United States has in fact, made some humanitarian
efforts there. The questions are broad and far reaching. If the situations in Rwanda and Bosnia occurred during the twentieth century, it in some way proves that civilization has not
progressed spiritually. Additionally, when comparing centuries, another thing to look at is the distribution of world power. In the past, there were the European Empires that were so important. Today,
it is the United States that seems to reign. Underneath the illusion of strength are economic and political variables that render the U.S.A. the superpower of the world, particularly after
