material, as well as the students investigation into the theoretical perspective of Wiener and Dodd (i.e., Coping Amid Uncertainty: An Illness Trajectory) has added depth of understanding and nuance to
the students previously stated positions. If this is the case, the student may choose to write something like the following when writing his personal essay on this topic: At the
beginning of the semester, I composed a personal description of the four meta-paradigms of nursing. Regarding the "person/client," I opinioned that the people are consistently striving toward a state of
balance in their lives and within an unstable environment. While I still support this view, exposure to literature concerning how patient/clients cope with uncertainty has added to my depth of
understanding on what precisely finding an equilibrium that is comfortable and fulfilling for the individual entails. My investigation into the theoretical work of Weiner and Dodd (1999) has been particularly
influential in this regard; however, other scholarly sources have also been influential in helping me to expand my personal philosophy regarding the patient/client. For example, Mishel has defined uncertainty as
the "inability to determine the meaning of illness-related events" (McCormick, 2002, p. 127). Furthermore, Chinn and Kramer (1999) offer explanation that helps to clarify the sub-dimensions of the Wiener/Dodd model,
which has also proven influential in broadening my perspective. Likewise, my view of environment has also changed, in that, it has gained breadth and scope the material I have
