Magazines such as Vogue had found an enthusiastic audience, and help propagate styles and deigns over wider areas, also becoming a centre of influence (Prior, 1980). If we look at the twentieth century we can see how fashions was not just a series of trends, but also an integral part of social development which evolved through the ages. The beginning of the twentieth century saw the new hope of the new century, as seen at every one hundred years (Peacock and LaCroix, 1993). However, the development of fashion was held back with social constraints until after the First World War, when some of the major development in fashion start to take place. These also accompany the social developments. In the 1920s there is increasing freedom for women, first fighting and then gaining the vote, event such as radio broadcasts starting and the invention of the typewriter created a respectable way for women to earn a living. In line with the prohibition of alcohol helped to create an era in the US known today as the roaring twenties (Peacock and LaCroix, 1993). This was a social invitation to lower social barriers. Hem lines rose and corsets were discarded, with women enjoying the increased feeling of freedom. Dresses were short and stocking were rolled down and there was increased desire to flout authority (Peacock and LaCroix, 1993). The discovery of more Egyptian tombs and the ability for this news to be reported widely lead to a reflection of Egyptian themes in fashion, also incorporating art nouveau and Aztec designs.
