scholars now realize that in order to understand the origins and context of Christianity, one must first understand its connection to Judaism.2 The body of writing that is referred to
by Christians as the "New Testament" resulted in a trend that culminated in early followers of Jesus Christ redefining themselves across the course of the second and third centuries in
a manner that made them distinct both from Judaism and from the variety of other religious cults that existed throughout the Greco-Roman world.3 While early Christians came to see the
writings of Paul as being equal in reverence and divine inspiration to the scripture of the Old Testament, this body of Judaic writing was the only scripture known to Paul.4
At the time when the books of the New Testament were being written, the self-understanding of early Christians that their belief system constituted a new religion, wholly different from that
of Judaism, had yet to evolve fully.5 This historical realization brings up questions about precisely how Christianity came to be perceived by its adherents as distinct from its Judaic origins.
How much of Christianity can be traced to Judaic elements? How was the transition from being an offspring of Judaism to becoming a fully-fledged and separate religion accomplished? Examination of
