and cost thousands of dollars to purchase" (Perryman, 2008). Reception was poor or non-existent, and bills "at times exceeded $1,000 per month. Now virtually everyone is carrying one all the
time" (Perryman, 2008) The first cell phone on the market was a Motorola DynaTac 8000X; it weighted two pounds and sold for $3,995 (Praeger, 2007). It held 30 numbers in
its memory and the battery lasted for approximately one hour (Praeger, 2007). In 1993, BellSouth/IBM introduced something called the "Simon Personal Communicator," which was the "first mobile phone to add
PDA features" (Praeger, 2007). It comprised not only a phone but also a calculator, address book, pager, email device and fax machine; it cost $900 (Praeger, 2007). The next step
came in 1996 when Motorola introduced the StarTAC, which was not only functional but fashionable, weighing 3.1 ounces (Praeger, 2007). In 1998, Nokia introduced the "6160, a 5.2-inch candybar-shaped phone.
It became Nokias best-selling phone in the 90s"; Kyocera brought out the SmartPhone in 2000 at a price of $500 (Praeger, 2007). In 2001, the "Handspring Treo 180" became the
first phone to include a QWERTY (standard) keyboard; the Blackberry made its appearance in 2002 (Praeger, 2007). In 2002, Sprint made the Sanyo SCP-5300 available; it was "the first mobile
