extensive and comprehension Online literature review about this topic. The purpose will inherently require a historical account of psychopharmacology. Psychopharmacology is based on the theory that mental illnesses and disorders
have a biological, genetic and/or neurological basis that acts in concert with the environment to cause specific disorders. Anxiolytic medications work because they treat these causes. Antipsychotic drugs inhibit certain
receptors in the brain allowing a person to become calm and to have a more positive elevated mood. The field of psychopharmacology came about from accidental discoveries. Medications being
investigated for treating certain physical conditions were found to be very effective antidepressants. The milestones in this field must be identified as the discoveries of: chlorpromazine, iproniazid, imipramine, and gluoxetine.
In terms of classes of drugs, these were MAOIs, SSRIs and SNRIs. These and numerous other psychopharmalogical treatments will be discussed in this paper along with those scientists and clinicians
who were responsible for investigating these drugs. This paper will first review generalized anxiety disorder. Symptoms including criteria for diagnosis from the DSM-IV-TR and ICD-10 along with comments from investigators
will be presented. The history and evolution of antipsychotic drugs will be presented. The paper will then discuss treating generalized anxiety disorder with medications and why these work. Generalized
anxiety disorder is prevalent in our society. It is important for all clinicians to have a firm grasp on this disorder as well as a firm grasp of psychopharmacology in
general and to have specific knowledge of treatment options for this disorder. GOALS/OBJECTIVES The goals and objectives of this study are: * To review the diagnostic criteria for
generalized anxiety disorder. Beyond the formal criteria, it is helpful to know what investigators have said about this disorder, especially in terms of diagnosing and treating it because the symptoms
