Judaism Well begin here, since it is older than Christianity. Both Judaism and Christianity define suffering as being the absence of God; i.e., not being in Gods presence. But in Judaism, great emphasis is also placed on the way in which God has had an impact on historical events; the Exodus, for example, is a cornerstone of the faith in which God showed himself to be trustworthy.1 "The distinctive genius of Israel lay in its realisation and acceptance of the possibility that God might disclose himself in the events of history.2 In other words, God has shown his hand in earlier historical events, and might conceivably do so again.3 Judaism thus has its roots in history, not mythology, and that has allowed it to thrive to this day. Judaism also teaches that God made covenants with the Jews, and these obligations "were subsequently accepted in their own right as being the revealed will of God, but the guarantee of that revelation, the guarantee, almost, that it is revelation, lay in Gods self-disclosure in historical events."4 The idea of a God who participates in historical events immediately begs the question of why he doesnt participate more often, which is another way of understanding suffering: Why doesnt he participate, and why does he leave his faithful servants to suffer?5 These questions are fundamental to understanding the problem of suffering. Its not that there was any doubt as to why suffering existed or what caused it (the reasons are revealed in Genesis); but there is a fundamental assertion that the reason for the problems is that man has chosen to distance himself from God: "...evil and suffering, summarized in death, are a consequence of Man (Adam) alienating himself from God.
