Establishing a resistance to the forces of evil is all-important to the Jews, who have spent centuries trying to escape its consequences. Characteristically reminiscent of past attempts to rid themselves of this overpowering entity, Smith and Novak carefully yet concisely address the conditions under which this might occur. Unquestionably present is that of tradition and all its implications toward a life free of evil, in spite of the fact that Jews have always considered themselves to be the persecuted people forever tied to a life of displeasure. The manner in which this applies to the existence of the state of Israel according to Smith and Novak, it can be surmised that the perpetual sense of persecution and evil experienced by the Jews maintains a direct relation to the way in which the state of Israel exists.
