issues relating to evidence-based practice with regard to the treatment of dementia which would need to be taken into account when assessing the effectiveness of diagnosis, treatment, and the development
of social and health care policies formulated to deal more effectively with the management of dementia. One would need to consider first of all the structure and function of evidence-based
practice and its importance to the health system, and then look in more specific detail at the extent to which best practice is disseminated and implemented, both in the UK
and internationally, in cases of dementia. In addition, since the
majority of cases of dementia are found in elderly patients, one also has to look at the ways in which health care systems and social care systems need to be
integrated, so that best practice from both can be incorporated into health care policies: this is particularly important where community care of the elderly, rather than long-term hospitalisation, is involved.
Park (2004), for example, makes the point that for elderly patients who have
severe behavioural problems, the only viable option for care is within NHS long stay facilities, although there should be wide range of services made available for those who do not
need constant monitoring and treatment. The aim is to utilise primary care and community settings wherever feasible, which will evidently require considerable liaison between medical staff and social workers. For
example, finding the right medication and remembering to administer it can cause problems for any patient with mental health problems, but even more so in the case of the elderly
