Fineout-Overholt (2005) identify being able to critically appraise research studies as the third step in evidence-based practice (EBP), coming after step one, which is asking clinical questions following the PICO
format and step two, assembling clinical evidence in order to answer a clinical question. The authors stress that nurses should have the skills to critique research articles and present a
"user-friendly, efficient approach" designed to help nurses with this task (Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt, 2005, p. 50). Their discussion is detailed, efficient and accomplishes this purpose. Schmitt, et al (2004) describe
how the Internet has inherent in it the potential to be a significant educational tool. Their article describes an online course for educating nurses regarding the implementation of evidence-based acute
pain management practices designed specifically for a geriatric patient population. As this suggests, the topic of evidence-based practice is touched on and explained, but in a cursory, brief manner, as
the focus of the discussion in on implementation of the Internet as a teaching tool. Hockenberry, Wilson and Barrera (2006) comment that EBP is quickly becoming seen as crucial
to the delivery of a consistently high level of pediatric care. This article addresses some of the controversy that surrounds this topic, as some critics have predicted that the focus
on EBP is a fad, however, the authors point out that many institutions have invested time and financial resources into the use of EBP to ensure quality nursing care. These
authors address barriers to EBP, resources need for EBP and how to implement EBP. They describe the five phases of EBP in nursing applications and in general offer a comprehensive
