the Hip Hop era, whether they like it or not. The reason this is likely true is that hip hop culture dominates today. The graffiti, the music, the baggy pants
have all invaded even suburban communities and while teenagers are enamored of some of the emerging artists, a variety of generations are pulled into the music. Not too long ago,
Kurt Cobain--who was not a hip hop artist but someone who fronted a grunge band--almost prophetically sang: "Everyone is gay." While it may seem as if television has gotten gay,
it is perhaps less obvious that MTV has gotten decidedly black. The hip hop movement to emanate from African American culture has as much to do with diversity as it
does with a mere new music genre designed to distinguish a new generation. First, what is hip hop exactly? While there are disagreements in terms of history and specific
locale, it is generally agreed that hip hop emanated from New York during the 1970s. Hip Hop is characterized by a certain type of rap music, break dancing and graffiti
art. It had emerged from the city, and primarily from "bad neighborhoods." Hip hop cultures have also developed their own language but generational jargon is quite common. Each generation speaks
a bit different language from that of their parents. Hip hop however is a culture entrenched in the creation of music and the playing of it. The DJ has become
an important part of Hip Hop. The clothing is also something quite different from mainstream fare but has actually been embraced by the dominant culture. Indeed, many generational trends that
begin as part of a counterculture movement are embraced by clothing designers. The low riding jeans so ingrained in the hip hop and rap movements have become somewhat mainstream.
