the western world. Life in Athens was comfortable for most. For many it could even be considered to have been glamorous. The buildings, economy, and culture were
reflective of a beautiful and well functioning city. Much of this can be attributed to fifth century Athenian government. It might even be said that the spatial equilibrium
of the city itself, a spatial equilibrium determined, of course, by the movement of people and industry was reflective of Athenian government. In short, practically all aspects of life
in fifth century Athens were related to government to one degree or another. This was, however, a fair representation of the people. It is not fair to say
that only a few influential men dominated politics because, in fact, each citizen had not only the opportunity to serve but also the duty to serve. That service was
not limited by socioeconomic standing but rather only to citizenship and good standing with the government. In all fairness, when considering fifth century
Athens, it must be noted that the city and the government were both products of a long evolution. Just as those who lived in this great city were influential
on others around the world, so too were they influenced by others. The Greeks of course were the primary movers in this period of world history. As an
intellectual center and center of commerce Athens served as a nervous center for Greece as a whole. Athenian democracy developed in Athens and its surrounding territory in this time
period and it ultimately proved to have widespread influence elsewhere as well. Other Greek cities and states around the world ultimately based their own democracies to a great degree
