they are incredibly different, and yet they are both sitcoms which present the viewer with a comedic look at family life. The following paper looks at the two, comparing and contrasting, as they involve married life, and as they involve parenting from different perspectives. Everybody Loves Raymond and Home Improvement The main married couple in Everybody Loves Raymond is Ray and his wife Deborah. In all honesty they have a very horrible relationship that is built on beating each other down as often as possible. They honestly seem to possess no love for one another and are in the relationship because they rely on the nastiness of it. So many marriages fall into a position where the two people are caught up in the habit of berating each other, caught in a dysfunctional relationship that feeds off of negativity and keeps going. These two people rarely, if ever, support one another. In Home Improvement there is a sense of lack of understanding in the married couple, Jill and Tim. In this relationship we clearly see a sense of how men and women often cannot communicate well enough to one another, and understand one another. However, what makes this married couple different is that they accept this and love one another. They give each other things, and try to understand one another as best they can. The audience feels that they do love each other and are trying to constantly improve, however they can, on their relationship. In Everybody Loves Raymond we know that Ray and Deborah have children, but they honestly rarely make an appearance in the show. We see toys strewn around the house but no children.
