Born in Colombia, raised in France, Ingrid Betancourt ran for the president of Colombia in 2002. Her objective
was to end the ongoing war between the guerilla forces that were rampaging across the country and the corrupt government to which they stood in opposition. If she won
the presidency she sought to end the government corruption and to negotiate the freedom of many that had been taken captive by the guerillas. On the campaign trail to
speak in a remote area of the country, Betancourt and a female member of her campaign team, were abducted by FARC. The women were immediately taken far into the
jungle and subjected to the most primal lining conditions possible. These womens captors, for the most part, provided only the most basic supplies and equipment that they needed to survive.
They were held in facilities that were not humanely sufficient and even subjected to brutal beatings, gang rape and other horrendous acts perpetrated by their captors. Still, Betancourt managed
not just to survive but to prosper as a person from her experience. After being held almost six and one-half years as a prisoner of FARC, the Colombian Army
finally infiltrated the organization and won Betancourts and several other captives freedom. Betancourt subsequently published "Even Silence Has an End", a book documenting her experiences during this period in her
