that actually revolves around two pairs of women set in different times. We watch the story of Ruth and Idgie evolve as Ninny, the sister-in-law to Idgie, recounts the history to a middle aged woman named Evelyn. We watch the story of Ruth and Idgie, set in the past, and the story of Evelyn and Ninny. Ninny is quite a bit older than Evelyn and we can assume that she is perhaps at least in her 80s. Evelyn is around 50 for she is going through the "change" in life. In the following paper we examine the cross generational relationship that develops between Ninny and Evelyn, illustrating how Evelyn becomes a stronger person, finding hope and strength and wisdom through the guidance of an elderly woman. Evelyn and Ninny At the beginning of Flaggs novel Evelyn is a woman who is very lost. She has always done essentially what is expected of her and given no complaints it would seem. She has raised a child, taken care of the house and her husband. She has done everything a good housewife and mother should do. But, she is not happy with this reality, though she is unsure where to go with her mixed emotions. We see this very clearly in the beginning of the novel, before she meets Ninny, in the following lines from Flaggs novel: "This morning, as they drove out to the nursing home, she [Evelyn] realized that her life was becoming unbearable... The quiet hysteria and awful despair had started when she finally began to realize that nothing was ever going to change...
