using this paper properly! Introduction In the short story "Eveline" by James Joyce we are presented with a very simple and sympathetic young woman. She is a woman who
is on the threshold of opportunity, in terms of her life and her future. Yet, she is afraid to take that final step that will allow her at least a
hint of freedom. This fear is largely due to her family life, wherein her father seems to be incredibly controlling, and where she has guilt attached to her mothers last
request. It should also be noted that her father seems to somewhat represent the man in her life, therefor she cannot really leave with another man. Eveline represents many
individuals who are caught up in the reality of a dysfunctional home where they claim they want out, but when offered a new life are fearful of such change, choosing
to live the life they are accustomed to instead. Eveline is a woman who has dreams and hopes, yet is too insecure and fearful to truly take that final step.
Eveline is also likely a woman who feels she must be the wife and mother, in regards to her father. In the following paper we present an examination of Eveline
arguing that she was not ready to leave home, for a variety of reasons, and that perhaps, she may never be ready to leave her dysfunctional home. Eveline
