Defined as propaganda, subversion, economic warfare and preventative direct action,1 American covert operations during the Cold War were for the most part ineffective yet also highly threatening to the imminent
future of the United States. Historical documentation points to no fewer than eight different attempts made upon Castros life, not the least of which included such covert devices as
poison (cigars, pens, pills) and powder designed to make Castros beard fall out with the intent of "ruining his charismatic image."2 Moreover, oil refineries and other industry were
sabotaged by raids, all of which failed to bring down Castro either in body or in reputation, and in fact served to bolster his image and status. Of all the
failed covert operations that took place during the Cold War, the Bay of Pigs is arguably the most notable for its infamy in light of the level of training, planning
and economic commitment this particular covert operation required. The aftermath not only resulted in CIA director Allen Dulles exiting the agency but also the ongoing breakdown between Cuba and
the United States.3 Twelve hundred American-trained Cuban exiles had visions of violently overthrowing Fidel Castro; however, the invasion suffered greatly at the hands of Castros air force and efficiently
prepared troops. Castro took delight in his ability to thwart their attempts, as well as force Kennedy to accept full responsibility for the failure, a turn of events that
