the reader is presented with a woman from Victorian times who has just learned her husband has died. She cries but then slowly begins to feel something come over her,
something that is liberating and joyous. In this respect she learns that she will have a future of freedom, outside the constraints of marriage which was a very powerful social
institution of the time. The following paper evaluates the storys presentation of the institution of marriage while also discussing the relationship that identity and irony plays in the institutions presence
in the story. Evaluation of Marriage in The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin Many modern readers of Chopins story will feel that the main character, Louise,
is rather cold for she does not cry a whole lot when she hears her husband has been killed and then further dislike her when she moves on to looking
to a wondrous future without her husband. What most readers may not be aware of is the truly restrictive nature of marriage in Victorian Times. Even if this woman, Louise,
loved her husband, which she says she did, the point was that she was ultimately, and completely, controlled by the institution of marriage and her husband. She had no identity
outside of this reality. Prior to focusing on these elements within the story it is imperative that a person understand the Victorian times as it pertains to men, women,
and marriage. Chopin was a woman of the Victorian Era and thus knew it well. During this time in history men were the controlling force in an incredibly damaging manner.
