Because the availability of "easy-to-read health information and instruction materials for patients with poor literacy skills heightens health disparities and dissatisfaction with care already experienced by many disadvantaged patients" (Wilson et al, 2003, pp. 68-76), it stands to reason how this study seeks to bridge that ever-widening social gap. That the Orem self-care deficit nursing theory is the focal point of this study speaks to the need for patients to take a proactive approach to their own state of health. Dependent variables include patient factors such as age, gender, education, sociocultural orientation, socioeconomic status, learning needs, cognitive abilities, attitude toward health, understanding of ones condition and interest in learning. Independent variables include educational materials as they relate to the patients ability to comprehend them. Study population is comprised of low literacy, disadvantaged respondents. II. REVIEW OF LITERATURE Orems self-care deficit theory helped bring to light the importance of the patients role in nursing. Because "effective communication of health information is pivotal to the efforts of practitioners in promoting health, changing behaviors and attitudes, and preventing disease" (Wilson et al, 2003, pp. 68-76), the use of this model illustrates how the success of ones recovery is primarily based upon ones own involvement, with the nurse acting as a guide. Indeed, Orem believed that nurses are paramount to overall recovery; however, she was quick to point out that recovery is not solely up to the nurse.
