Armed Forces (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia or FARC) of Colombia. Discussion Guerrilla groups have been operating in Colombia since the 1960s; during that time they have expanded and contracted
in size; won and lost battles; and gained and lost supporters (Nagle, 2005). "As the initial leftist, peasant-based idealism gradually waned, the government entrenched itself against the resistance, and revolutionary
victories could not be secured" (Nagle, 2005, p. 5). Despite this, the guerrillas became established and offered a means by which Colombias poor and disenfranchised "could find empowerment and succor"
(Nagle, 2005, p. 5). Two groups, the FARC and the ELN, "emerged as the two most persistent and long-lived iconoclastic non-state actors in Colombia" (Nagle, 2005, p. 5). Both groups
"muddled along for many years" by using criminal methods such as kidnapping and extortion to raise money for their operations (Nagle, 2005, p. 5). At times, they were supported by
money from such nations as Cuba and "Cuban-backed actors throughout Latin America, Russia, and even China" (Nagle, 2005, p. 5). Things might have continued as they were except for four
events that occurred during the 20 years from the 1970s to the early 1990s; these events radically changed the motivations and make-up of both groups, which then led to their
current status as being among the most important of all terrorist organizations (Nagle, 2005, p. 5). Presumably if becoming recognizes as an effective terrorist is a measure of success, then
the FARC has been successful. The four events that shifted the FARC from a guerrilla band to an effective organization were the "end of the Cold War"; the increase
