labeled as being delinquent. America criminal justice system has historically established separate criteria for boys and girls under the age of 18 that falls under the juvenile court jurisdiction.
The primary differences between juvenile and adult courts are that most sentences cannot extend beyond age 25; juveniles cannot be sentenced to life in prison without parole or receive
the death penalty; juveniles are entitled to special rehabilitative services and education that are unavailable to adult offenders; and they are presided over by a judge who delivers the final
verdict (there is no trial by jury) (The Center for Young Womens Development Handbook, 2002). Within the juvenile system, there are two types of offenders. First, there is
the status offender, which as the name indicates, is determined by the status of the individual as a juvenile. This means this person has committed what is regarded as
a youth crime, such as truancy, breaking curfew, or running away from home (The Center for Young Womens Development Handbook, 2002). This usually involves some type of probation arrangement
or counseling/treatment (The Center for Young Womens Development Handbook, 2002). A delinquent offender is a juvenile who has committed a crime that adults are prosecuted felonies (such
as rape, murder, drug trafficking) and misdemeanors (such theft, prostitution, and some drug crimes) (The Center for Young Womens Development Handbook, 2002). Status offenders and juvenile delinquents are treated
