- properly! Nursing-sensitive outcome indicators (NSOIs) are regarded as "a valuable
tool for determining nursing quality of care" (Hart, et al, 2006, p. 256). These indicators specifically indicate that complications, such as pressure ulcers, and the use of patient restraints are
considered to be negative outcomes. The assignment scenario indicates several areas in which nursing-sensitive indicators can assist in identifying issues that are detrimental to quality patient care. Specifically, the NSOIs
indicated in the scenario are the complication of a developing pressure ulcer; the use of restraints; and patient satisfaction. The scenario implies that Mr. J. is developing a pressure
ulcer, as his daughter notices a "red, depressed area over Mr. J.s lower spine, similar to a severe sunburn." The Mayo Clinic warns that pressure ulcers can "develop quickly, progress
rapidly and are often difficult to heal" ("Bedsores," 2009). A pressure ulcer at stage 1 of development appears as a "persistent area of red skin" and they typically go away
after the pressure is alleviated. However, as Mr. J. is immediately retrained again, presumably in the same position, there is the continued risk that the pressure ulcer will continue to
develop, as it seems likely that being constrained to one position in the bed is instrumental to the development of a pressure ulcer. Secondly, there is the issue of
the restraints themselves. Mr. J. suffers from "mild dementia," which may be acerbated by the pain medication for a fractured hip, which causes him to be drowsy. The scenario implies
