couples split. According to both Craig (2003) and MacLean et al (2002), there are a number of discrepancies with regard to the manner by which married and cohabitating couples are
addressed when the union is brought to a close; when children are involved, those inconsistencies can represent harmful results. For example, MacLean et al (2002) cite a case in
which a couple lives together for fifteen years, with two small children the result of this union. The parents terminate their relationship, leaving the mother with what savings she
amassed from a part-time job and the father with his pension. This financial incongruity plays an integral role in how the situation ultimately works out to benefit the father,
inasmuch as the jointly owned home was sold and its proceeds split evenly between the two, causing the mother to buy a smaller home for her and the two children.
Had they been party to a legally bound marriage, one might readily speculate how she would have been able to stay with the original house, which is far better
suited for raising the children (MacLean et al, 2002). Protection under British and Welsh law has represented a number of things when it
comes to children, with major changes occurring after World War II. These social changes were responsible for the influence of contemporary views "on the position of minors in society
