This 5 page paper looks at some of the issues which should be considered when designing research. initial evaluation takes place when assessing the development and framing of the research problem and question. A useful approach is based on Toulmin (1958, quoted Gold et al, 2002, p272)
framework with the creation of an argument which is made up of the data, the claim and the warrant. Examining the problem of poor communication the critical evaluation starts at
the beginning when examining the problem. Communication may be seen as difficult to diagnose, it is assessed main through the symptoms that are observed. With symptoms such as absenteeism, low
levels of productivity, high accident rates and high attention levels and overall low levels of motivation there is an apparent problem of some type. Theoretically, it is possible for these
different problems to reflect differing underlying issues at a firm, however in this research the data has been linked with a single claim, which is justified with the warrant.
When looking at the problems that are present in the firm it was necessary to use critical thinking to assess the potential issues that were causal factors. Gold (et
al, 2003, p373) put forward four types of critical thinking; the critique of rhetoric, the critique of tradition, the critique of authority and the critique of knowledge. These may be
framed as different forms of critique, but are often interdependent, as Gold (et al, 2003, p373), note they are not mutually exclusive. The problems within a firm may be starting
with a critique of rhetoric. Observation requires watching what is occurring, as well as listing to what is being said, in some cases what is not being said. In an
organisation where there is a low level of morale there may be a great deal of rhetoric within the employee base concerning the actions of employers. Comments such as, "they
