presidency. Discussion Although John Adams was one of those who played a vital part in the founding of the American nation, he has sort of faded into the background,
overshadowed by people like Franklin, Jefferson, Patrick Henry and George Washington (Bruns, 2007). Still, historian and Pulitzer Prize winner David McCullough made Adams the subject of a well-received biography, which
suggests that there is something in the life and career of the man worth a second look. McCullough portrays Adams as a "reluctant politician" who would rather have been at
home with his wife and children than wrestling with the problems of the new government (Bruns, 2007). Still, when he "realized the struggling colonies needed men of wisdom and dedication
to guide the events that were unfolding, he became one of the most tenacious patriots of the Revolution" (Bruns, 2007). Despite what other historians have said about him, McCullough provides
evidence to support the idea that it was Adamss "voice of reason and his unflagging persistence ... [that were] more directly responsible for the outcome than those who usually receive
the lions share of the credit" (Bruns, 2007). McCullough says that Adams had an "astute political mind" as well as being an eloquent writer; further his "visionary contributions to the
painful birth of our fledgling country can be found in nearly every major step taken and document drawn" (Bruns, 2007). Adams was one of the very few who saw that
